Obregon, Mexico Mission Trip 2006
I remember how excited we were when we learned about the Obregon, Mexico mission trip. We waited with much anticipation to hear the full details. We agree to do a few fundraiser and to help with the trip preparation. The Lord blessed and multiplied our efforts. I remember as we crossed over the border, the look in our eyes was priceless. For most of us, it was our first time in a foreign country. Many of us had never thought that the day would come. Our team arrived late Sunday evening in a small town of Obregon. The moon was our only natural source of light for the last 4 hours of our trip. Needless to say, we got lost many times before we found our way to the orphanage. A couple of lone building set aside a small road. The soccer field had dried up from the sun and it was now a dirt field. We unpacked our bags, picked out the rooms where we would sleep. But we were so excited it was hard to fall asleep. Finally, we settled down for the night and early morning we woke up ready to begin working around the orphanage. Through much hard work, we managed to help fix and rebuild some of the needs that they had.
Our most memorable time was spent with the children. It was such a blessing to make new friends and we quickly grew to love them as our own. Together we spent time playing soccer, reading books, learning Spanish, singing songs, and playing on the swing set. It truly was a high time for us to be able to spend this precious time with the children at the orphanage. We saw how they desired to learn more about Jesus. The Lord used us to share stories of encouragement and hope. We read Bible stories together of great men who were faithful to God and the Lord protected them and provided for their needs. I believe we were able to build friendships for eternity and share the love of God. As we shared glimpses of hope with the orphans, we too were impacted by their love, generosity, kindness, and friendship.
Surely the highlight of our construction mission trip project was our day trip to the beach with the children from the orphanage. Many of them had never been to the beach. We made the 2 hour journey to the coast along some bumpy and uneven roads. Yet, it was all worth it to see the children enjoy the beach for the very first time. To think that all their life they had lived a short 2 hour drive from the beach, but never had the opportunity to actually go to the beach. They didn’t have parents to take them to the beach. Our hearts rejoiced to see the smiles on these children’s faces as they splashed in the water.
For me it was a tremendous blessing to be a part of this mission trip. I know that the Lord was with us and blessed our trip. I pray that no matter where we are and what we are doing, that we will take time to serve those who are neglected and underprivileged. May our Lord continue to move upon the hearts of men and women to dedicate themselves in finishing the work to hasten the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Maranatha!
